The move that made everyday feel like a holiday

Nearly two years after moving into Oak Tree Retirement Village Cairns, John and Deb laugh about the fact they haven’t bothered taking a holiday since arriving.

“We don’t need one,” John says. “Every day here feels like we’re on holiday.”

The couple are thrilled to be enjoying the lifestyle they’d been hoping to find in retirement – relaxed, active and social.

A move that changed their thinking completely

Before discovering Oak Tree, John and Deb had been considering downsizing into an apartment. Living in nearby Port Douglas, they knew they wanted to make the move to Cairns to be nearer to hospitals, doctors and essential services as they got older.

At the time, John and Deb were both in their 60s. “We were starting to plan ahead,” Deb says. “We’re both active and independent, but we knew eventually we’d want easier access to everything.”

“We were originally looking at apartments,” John says. “But then we saw an advertisement for Oak Tree. Everything changed after that first visit.”

“We just fell in love with the village,” Deb says.

From the tree-lined entrance through to the villas themselves, the whole place felt welcoming, modern and thoughtfully designed. “The presentation was beautiful,” John says. “The villas were lovely, the gardens were immaculate, and the community centre was incredible.”

Inside the community centre, they found far more than they expected – books, jigsaws, a pool table, social spaces, a dance floor, bowls equipment and plenty of room for activities and gatherings. “It felt vibrant,” Deb says. “It was clearly designed for people to genuinely enjoy living there.”

Designed for now, and for later

The villa itself was another surprise. “It was huge to start with, and it honestly felt like moving into a brand-new home,” John says. “Fresh paint, new kitchen, new bathrooms – everything had been beautifully done.”

But it wasn’t just about appearances. The more time they spent there, the more they noticed the subtle details that make life easier as people age.

“Wide doorways, practical layouts, sliding bathroom doors – but none of it feels clinical. It’s just smart design,” Deb says.

The garden also played a big part in their decision. “We didn’t want to lose that outdoor lifestyle,” Deb says. “Here, you can still have a garden and potter around if you want to.”

A community that cares

What has impressed John and Deb most over the past two years is the genuine sense of care throughout the village. Village Manager Glen and Groundskeeper Colin both left a strong impression from the very beginning. “They genuinely care about people,” John says. “It’s not just a job to them.”

Whether it’s quietly checking in on residents, helping behind the scenes, or simply making time for a conversation, the couple say both men go well beyond what’s expected. “They do things quietly, without fanfare,” Deb says. “But you notice it.”

That same feeling extends throughout the wider community. “It’s a two-way thing here,” John says. “If you want to keep to yourself, nobody bothers you. But if you want to get involved socially, there are endless opportunities.”

The village caters to all personalities and lifestyles, something the couple deeply appreciate.

An active lifestyle, close to everything

For John and Deb, most mornings still revolve around exercise. “We start slowly,” Deb says. “Maybe sit outside with a coffee or spend a bit of time in the garden.”

Then it’s time to get moving. “There’s a big bridge nearby where we do stair climbs,” John says. “We do free weights, yoga, water exercise, all sorts of things.”

The heated pool has become one of their favourite features. “They installed an electric heater last year, and it’s fantastic,” he says. “Some people use it for gentle recovery, while others exercise more intensely. I even run in the pool because it’s easier on my knees.”

While the couple already have plenty of interests and activities outside the village, they also love knowing there’s a strong social side waiting whenever they choose to lean into it more.

“At this stage of life, we’re still out and about a lot,” Deb says. “But it’s lovely knowing there’s always something happening here too.”

From cards and jigsaws to bowls, community afternoons and social gatherings, there’s always an opportunity to connect.

And with Cairns itself right on their doorstep, there’s no shortage of things to enjoy.

Shopping centres, pharmacies, clinics, hospitals and public transport are all nearby, while the famous Cairns Esplanade remains a favourite destination.

“We’ll head into town, walk along the Esplanade, soak up the atmosphere and then come home,” John says. “It’s a wonderful lifestyle.”

No regrets

Looking back, John and Deb are certain they made the right decision. They’re spending their time enjoying life – staying healthy, connected and independent in a community that genuinely suits them.

And for two people who haven’t felt the need to take a holiday in almost two years, that probably says everything.
