Oak Tree Retirement Villages_Website_Resident Stories_Toowoomba_Neville and Alison

Sunsets, support and a sense of belonging at Oak Tree Platz Street, Darling Heights

After more than 60 years of marriage, 13 moves, and a life spent across Queensland, Alison and Neville Page know what it means to create a home. Their last house in Rangeville was a lovely one, but after 20 years, the hedges, lawns, and upkeep became too much. “We had a beautiful home,” Alison says, “but it was getting harder to manage, and we knew the time had come to think about the future.”

A tip from the bowling club

The Pages had heard about Oak Tree Retirement Villages, but a conversation at the local bowling club gave them the nudge they needed. “I was talking to a lady who lived at Oak Tree Platz Street, and she told me about their open day,” Alison recalls. “We went along for a look, and while we weren’t quite ready then, Oak Tree stayed in our minds.”

Later, when they visited again, the decision came easily. “Everyone was so friendly, and when we saw the villa we’re in now, we just knew. It felt right straight away.”

Views, sunsets and a sense of home

Four years on, Alison and Neville couldn’t be happier. Their villa has everything they need, plus something extra special – “the most beautiful view,” Alison says. “We watch the sunset every night. It’s something we never tire of.”

Oak Tree life also gives them freedom. “You can do as much or as little as you like,” Alison says. “There are always activities organised, and plenty of opportunities to join in, but you can take things quietly too. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Busy lives, inside and outside the village

Alison and Neville remain deeply involved in their church and community. Alison plays bowls, cards, and mahjong, while Neville enjoys Probus. “Neville can’t bowl anymore, but he always encourages me,” Alison smiles.

Inside the village, there’s a steady stream of things to do – from men’s lunches to casual get-togethers. “There’s always something happening if you want to be part of it,” Alison says.

A community that feels like family

For the Pages, one of the greatest joys of Oak Tree Retirement Villages has been the friendships they’ve made. “People are friendly, and you feel secure knowing others are looking out for you,” Alison says. “These people become your family now. We’ve always been lucky with neighbours wherever we’ve lived, and it’s the same here – we look out for each other.”

Looking back

Alison and Neville have no doubt they made the right choice. “We’ve had a lifetime of moves, but this one was easy,” Alison reflects. “We’re very happy here. We’ve got the view, the activities, the support, and the friends. It’s a lovely place to call home.”
