Still blooming at Oak Tree Mudgee

After a lifetime spent building, growing, and caring for things – from plants to people – Georgie and Terry aren’t slowing down anytime soon.

The couple moved into Oak Tree Retirement Village, Mudgee, and haven’t looked back.

“We just couldn’t manage the big two-storey house and garden anymore,” says Terry. “Our son and daughter suggested we take a look at Oak Tree, and when we saw the home – even before it was finished – we knew it was the right decision.”

It took time to downsize. After decades in Mudgee, including running the much-loved Georgie’s Jungle nursery, the couple had a lot to sort through.

“We had a shed 70 feet long, full of antiques and all sorts of things,” Georgie laughs. “We held garage sales, sent some of the special pieces to auction, and made sure everything went to good homes.”

A life in full bloom

Georgie and Terry have lived in Mudgee for more than 40 years and are well-known in the community. Georgie’s nursery, Georgie’s Jungle, was a local favourite, drawing gardeners from all over the region.

“We were told by many people that we had one of the best nurseries west of the Blue Mountains,” she recalls proudly. “I was even on the radio twice a week talking about plants and giving away prizes.”

Between the nursery and Terry’s work as a refrigeration mechanic, the pair have always been hands-on. They even ran a successful Airbnb in Mudgee for seven years, earning glowing reviews from guests who loved their friendly, personal touch.

These days, that same warmth fills their Oak Tree Retirement Village home. Their front garden is lined with pots of flowering succulents – “about 50,” Georgie says – and their back garden is “a joy to look at” because of all the work and care that Terry puts into it.

The joy of easy living

When asked about the best thing about life at Oak Tree Mudgee, the answer comes quickly.

“No mowing. No council rates.” Terry says. “It’s much cheaper than living in a townhouse. We just pay one reasonable weekly fee, and that covers everything.”

But it’s not just about convenience. “There are no steps in the whole village – only ramps,” Georgie adds. “That’s a big thing for us. It makes life easier.”

They also appreciate the village’s sense of organisation and care. “Our village manager is wonderful,” Georgie says. “She’s a lovely organiser.”

Surrounded by family

Georgie and Terry’s three children, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren keep life busy and full. Two of their families live locally, with another daughter in Terry Hills.

“It’s wonderful having family close by,” says Georgie. “There’s always something happening!”

For all their years, Georgie and Terry remain active, positive, and grateful for what life brings. “You’ve got to have a reason to get out of bed in the morning,” Terry says.

Looking ahead

Georgie and Terry say the key to staying young is simple: keep moving, keep laughing, and keep good company.

“We’ve always believed in staying positive and enjoying life,” Georgie says. “Oak Tree makes that easy. It’s comfortable, friendly, and everything we need is right here.”
