For Kathy and Alan, the decision to move to Oak Tree was a natural one. After living in a lovely home in Rutherford, they began considering their future and exploring retirement villages in the area.
“We were getting older, and our house was on a hill,” Kathy explains. “The mowing and gardening became more challenging, so we started looking at different villages.”
After visiting Oak Tree and liking what they saw, fate stepped in at just the right moment. “We were coming back from a trip to Forster when one of the managers rang to say there was a villa available. Were we interested in coming back to have a look? We did – and the rest is history.”
Their journey to Oak Tree moved quickly from there. Initially, they put a deposit on a villa that wasn’t yet built. But then they were shown another villa, one that had previously been a display home. “They asked if we liked gardening, and when we said yes, they showed us this one. We walked in and said, ‘It’s ours.’”
Everything fell into place, and within a week, their home was sold, paving the way for their move into Oak Tree Rutherford.
Now, three years and two months later, Kathy and Alan couldn’t be happier with their vibrant, social lifestyle at Oak Tree.
“The village is very social and such a wonderful place. We have a great social committee that put on several events, and there’s always something happening.”
For Alan, one of the highlights is the pool table. “He plays pool three times a week,” Kathy shares. Meanwhile, Kathy enjoys using the swimming pool and they both love to attend the monthly trivia nights. “It’s a beautiful thing. You can join in when you want to, but you can also just sit at home and read a book if you prefer.”
One of Kathy’s favourite activities is the craft sessions. “It’s really the highlight of my week. We have lovely ladies who sit, chat, laugh, and make things for oncology patients at Maitland Hospital. It’s truly wonderful.”
One of the key benefits of moving to Oak Tree for Kathy and Alan has been the peace of mind that comes with independent living. “We weren’t at the stage where we needed assisted living – we wanted to maintain our independence while having the option to access support if we need it down the line.”
The village provides the perfect balance of freedom and convenience. “No more maintenance!” Kathy says. “We love that we can still look after our own garden, and when the time comes, we can get help if we need it.”
Moving to Oak Tree also helped them establish new connections. “We moved down from Halliday’s Point and didn’t know anyone in Rutherford. Being part of the village has been a great way to meet people and build friendships.”
Kathy is also quick to praise the village staff. “Our Village Manager Tiffany is wonderful. She’s always approachable, and if you have a problem, there’s always an answer.”
We also have an amazing groundsman. He knows I love gardening, and I always get his advice to make sure what I do fits in with the rest of the village.”
Looking back, Kathy and Alan know they made the right decision. “It’s a beautiful village, and we absolutely love it here.”
