After 35 years in Cairns, Lynn made the kind of move many only talk about. She swapped a four–bedroom house (and the year-round heat) for a two–bed villa at Oak Tree Retirement Village, Platz Street, Darling Heights and discovered how good four distinct seasons can feel. “It was a big decision,” she says, “but the change has been wonderful. Autumn leaves, crisp mornings, spring flowers – I don’t mind the cold at all.”
Family helped shape the choice. Lynn’s brother lives in Toowoomba, her sister and nieces are in Brisbane, and she didn’t want city living. “Toowoomba was the perfect balance,” she says. “Close to family, a beautiful climate, and a friendly pace.”
It just felt right
Lynn did her homework first. She flew down, toured several retirement villages with her brother, and kept coming back to one simple truth: Oak Tree Platz Street felt like home. “When we drove in, there was a lovely feeling,” she recalls. “Even my brother said, ‘If this is the one, you’ll know.’ And I did.”
The practicalities fell into place easily. She joined the waitlist, worked with a great agent in Cairns, and found the Oak Tree Platz Street team straightforward to deal with – even using the same conveyancer for a smooth settlement. “It was a very easy transition,” she says.
Freedom to come and go
One of Lynn’s favourite parts of village life is how simple it is to travel. With family and friends still in Cairns, she heads north for birthdays and holidays and knows her place will be fine while she’s away. “You just lock up and go,” she says. “The unit’s looked after, the gardens are maintained, the essentials like fire alarms and air-conditioning are serviced – there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Now I can plan trips when I like – a few weeks in December for my daughter’s milestone birthday, another visit for my granddaughter’s 21st. It’s lovely to have that freedom.”
A full life outside – and good friends inside
If there’s a stereotype about retirement living being quiet, Lynn is the exception. “I’ve never been busier,” she laughs. Many of her Cairns friends were still working; in Toowoomba, she found her people through craft. “I joined Toowoomba Quilters and made a great circle of friends. We meet weekly or fortnightly at each other’s homes, and when it’s my turn, I book the village centre for a sewing day. The girls love it.”
Inside the village, she chooses from a menu of easy-going social options: morning teas, ladies’ lunches, outings, and Friday happy hour (she drops in for the monthly BBQ). “I don’t rely on the village to be my whole social life,” she says. “I join in when I want to – and nobody minds when I’m busy elsewhere. That’s the beauty of it.”
The right size, the right feel
Lynn appreciates the scale and spirit of Oak Tree Platz Street. “We’re a smaller community – about 20 villas now, growing to around 55 when construction finishes – which is a nice size,” she says. “You know when a neighbour’s away or needs a check-in, but we’re not in each other’s pockets. There if you want us, quiet if you don’t.”
Day to day, the maintenance provided by Oak Tree makes life lighter. She tends a little back garden for the joy of it and happily lets the village team look after the front.
Feeling safe, feeling at home
Living on her own, Lynn values the easy sense of security and the kindness of neighbours. “You feel safe here,” she says. “And people care – that’s the difference. It’s a very supportive place to live.”
She’s also fallen for Toowoomba itself. The city’s spring festival is a highlight: “The Carnival of Flowers is just beautiful, all the spring blooms, the parks. It’s something I never had in the tropics.”
“I’m really happy I made this choice.”
Looking back, Lynn describes the move as a series of fortunate events and sound decisions. (There’s even a fun thread of 22s: she got her villa offer on 22 May, moved in on 22 August, in 2022 – and her birthday is the 22nd.) “It felt meant to be,” she says.
Most of all, it feels like home. “I’m really happy here – with the seasons, the freedom to travel, my quilting friends, and lovely neighbours,” Lynn says. “It’s been a very good move.”
