Cairns: why you should retire in Queensland’s tropical north

Located in far north Queensland, Cairns is a tropical paradise where the rainforest meets the reef. It is a laid back, modern, and stylish city that offers an abundance of picturesque surroundings, palm fringed beaches, great restaurants, and memorable adventures. It’s hot climate means light, casual clothes, and a relaxed, carefree lifestyle.

While there are countless adventures to be had in Cairns, listed below are the top things you should do while in the beautiful, tropical North Queensland.

Visit the Great Barrier Reef.

The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest coral reef system, boasting a collection of just under 3000 individual reefs and 900 islands across 350,00 square kilometres. Whether you’re gazing at it from above, below, or all around, it is mind-blowing beautiful and a must see if you’re in Cairns. You can hover over it via helicopter, snorkel or drive, charter a yacht, view it from the underwater observatory, go on a glass bottom boat ride, or camp overnight on a platform out at sea! The options are endless and there is something for everyone.

Visit a waterfall.

Cairns is home to a vast array of magical waterfalls. Often referred to as ‘nature’s playground’, Josephine Falls is nestled into the foothills of Queensland’s highest mountain range, Bartle Frere. It’s an easy 600m walk to the breathtaking bottom swimming hole, where wheelchair access is provided.

Located only 25 minutes from Cairns CBD, Crystal Cascades is a series of swimming holes and cascading falls. If you’re more adventurous, there are tours which offer abseiling and zip lining. Alternatively, you can relax and float around in one of the many crystal-clear pools. Fairy Falls, Old Weir Falls, and Behana Gorge are just a few of the other amazing waterfalls Cairns has to offer.

Explore the Skyrail Experience.

Located just 15 minutes north of Cairns city, the Skyrail experience offers a fascinating journey of discovery, and ventures deep into Australia’s Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. Here you will descend through the canopy from inside a gondola suspended on a cable and explore one of the most ancient pockets of rainforest on earth. You will have the chance to discover the rainforest like you never have before.

Swim in a lagoon.

Unfortunately, the jellyfish and crocodile population that habit the beaches in Cairns make swimming in the ocean dangerous. There are however waterholes like Cairns Lagoon, a pool at the front of the promenade that is a local favourite. Here you can get an ice cream and cool off with a dip!

Feast on fresh seafood.

Given its location, it is no surprise that Cairns boasts some of the best seafood in Queensland. If you aren’t big on the outdoors or visiting some of the tropical landmarks, dining-in at one of the many elegant seafood restaurants is a must. Head to Prawn Star for something more casual, or Salt House for a sophisticated, fine dining experience! Our Oak Tree Retirement Village in Cairns is located in White Rock, 10-15 minutes south of the famous Cairns Esplanade and all the city has to offer.
