A simpler life with more joy at Oak Tree Norman Gardens

After nearly six years at Oak Tree Retirement Village Norman Gardens, Meredith has found a way of living that feels easy, familiar and just right.

But getting there was about knowing when it was time for a change.

The home she shared with her husband had been right for many years – a large house, plenty of space, and a big garden. Over time, though, that same space became harder to manage.

“It just got too much,” Meredith says. “The house was big, and the garden needed constant work.”

They weren’t looking for anything extravagant, just something more manageable. When Meredith first visited Oak Tree Norman Gardens, one thing stood out immediately.

“The community wasn’t too big,” she says. “That really appealed to me.”

It was a big decision, but one that made sense.

A home that works with you

These days, Meredith enjoys the balance her home offers. She has enough space to feel comfortable, without the burden of constant upkeep.

“It’s a good size,” she says. “And I’ve still got a garden, but it’s only small and is easy to look after.”

That change has made everyday life feel lighter. There’s less time spent maintaining a home, and more time simply enjoying it.

Neighbours who feel like neighbours

While independence is important, Meredith also values the quiet sense of connection around her. “I know my neighbours,” she says. “They’re there if I want them, but they don’t intrude.”

It’s a natural, easy kind of community, built on small, everyday moments. There’s the neighbour she swaps meals with – puddings one way, dinners the other. A good friend just across the way. Others who are happy to lend a hand or offer a lift when needed.

“You look out for each other,” Meredith says. “That’s just how it is.” There’s comfort in knowing someone is nearby, without feeling like you’re living on top of one another.

A companion who changed everything

One of the biggest changes in Meredith’s life came after the loss of her husband, when her family encouraged her to get a dog. At first, she wasn’t sure. Now, she can’t imagine life without him.

Charlie – or if you use his full and proper name, it’s Charles Stanley – is a Cavoodle with a personality that’s hard to miss.

“He’s a joy,” Meredith says. And not just for her. “He knows everyone,” she laughs. “When he sees people, he stands up on his back legs with his front paws in the air. He puts on a bit of a show.”

It’s a move that never fails to get attention. “He melts hearts,” Meredith says. “Everyone knows him.” These days, Charlie is part of Meredith’s daily routine, and a big part of what makes life feel full again.

A place that feels right

With family in Brisbane and near Narrabri, Meredith still enjoys making the trip to visit when she can. But at home in Norman Gardens, life has found a new rhythm.

It’s simpler. More manageable. And filled with the kind of connection that happens naturally, whether it’s a chat with a neighbour, a shared meal, or a walk around the village with a very well-known little dog.

For Meredith, it’s not about changing everything. It’s about finding the right place to enjoy what matters most.
