Makeup tips for mature skin

Thursday, 21 January 2021

Naturally, as your skin changes, the way you apply your makeup should too. Ageing is inevitable, and instead of using makeup to cover the visible signs of ageing, embrace the changes to your skin and use makeup to enhance your best features! The below tips will help you achieve a youthful, timeless makeup look that will make you look like you’re glowing from the inside out!

Begin with a hydrated base.

Ensuring your bare face is well hydrated before makeup application is the best way to guarantee your makeup goes on evenly and smoothly. Before foundation, apply either a moisturiser, beauty oil, or hydrating primer to create a glowing, smooth base. This will make your skin look even and youthful!

Keep your base light.

It can be tempting to use a lot of product or a full coverage foundation to combat discolouration or imperfections, but a lot of the time this can end up looking very heavy and actually make your skin look more aged. Stick with a light layer of a light coverage foundation, then spot conceal your imperfections with a concealer and concealer brush. This will give you much more precision and result in a more natural, effortless look.

Experiment with cream products.

The dewy, natural finish of cream products makes them perfect for creating a ‘glowing from the inside out’ look. They are forgiving and easy to work with, making them perfect for beginners, and very buildable, so you can slowly work your way up to your desired coverage. Apply a cream bronzer around the perimeter of your face to create some dimension, and a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks to create a healthy, flushed look. You can also add some cream highlighter to your cheekbones and cupids bow for an extra glow. If you have oily skin or need your makeup to last all day, set your face with a very light converge, translucent powder after applying your cream products.

Frame your face.

Framing your face using makeup can help to give you a more youthful look, with particular focus on your eyebrows, lashes, and lips. Filling in your eyebrows can instantly transform your look and make you look more striking. You can achieve this with an eyebrow pencil, an eyebrow gel, or a brow pomade and brush. If you aren’t sure how, YouTube tutorials are a great place to start!

For long, thick lashes, start by curling them with an eyelash curler, then apply your mascara. Some great, affordable mascaras for voluminous lashes include L’Orèal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Mascara, Maybelline Total Temptation Mascara, and CoverGirl LashBlast Clean Volume Mascara. If you’re going to apply eyeshadow, avoid overly glittery or shimmery shades, as well as black or very dark shades. Keep it soft and stick with light bronzes and peachy pink tones, with a small pop of shimmer on the lid.

Finally, adding a coloured lipstick is the perfect way to transform your makeup. Matching the colour of your lipstick and blush will create a seamless look and tie everything together. Colours that tend to great on mature women include peach, muted rose, rosy brown, and mauve. Before applying your lipstick, outline your lips with a lip liner. This is great for framing the lips and creating your desired shape! Also, be sure to choose a lipstick with a hydrating formula, as mattes can seep into your lip lines.
